RINGS
Most weddings include an exchange of rings. Less common is an exchange
of some other item, such as a necklace. Sometimes only the bride receives
a ring. It is more common for both to receive rings. Rings are usually
held by the attendants or a ring bearer until time for the exchange of
rings.
Ring Ceremonies
1. Minister asks:
Do you_______, accept this ring and promise
to wear it as an ever-
lasting symbol of your commitment to the vows
you have spoken? I do. |
|
2. Minister has couple repeat as the ring is placed:
"With this ring I wed you, and pledge my everlasting
love." |
3. Vows are repeated as the ring is placed:
"I take you_______, to be my husband/wife,
for better for worse, for
richer for poorer, in sickness and health,
so long as we both shall live."
(This combination of vows and ring bring together
words and symbols
of commitment allowing for a very simple and
brief wedding). |
4. Other words and ways may be used in the presentation of rings. |
Readings
A reading of some brief paragraph or poem that speaks to the theme of married
love and commitment is appropriate, usually following the exchange of rings.
This may be in place of a solo, or in addition. Some passages of Scripture
also work well. Readings may be assigned to close family or friends. |
Blessings and Prayers
Many varieties of prayers and blessings are possible. The blessing usually
precedes the pronouncement of marriage. Some suggestions follow: |
1. Our prayer today for _________and___________is this:
That the promise of love that bursts with
the beauty of springtime, be
fresh in the heat of summer, mellow in the
changing fall and warm in
midst of winter. |
That you may be lovers, partners and best
friends throughout your lives |
That your words of promise and the hopes of
your hearts will find
fulfillment and blessing. Amen |
2. Now may the Spirit of Life bless this marriage. May the sun
and moon
and stars enlighten this love. May the earth
and sky and universe sing for
this commitment. May family and friends join
to encourage this
partnership. May joy and love grow and deepen
with every sunset. May
the Spirit of Life walk with you as you walk
together all the days of
your lives. |
