”His parents went
      to Jerusalem...”

Memories return of awhile ago
      when the parents
      took the baby to Egypt.

Across deserts and rivers...
      long and dangerous roads
      to a strange land.

The heart aches
      for a far away infant
      growing and changing.

Grandparent influence
      and grandparent arms
      languish over the miles.

Parents are not aware
      of the daily prayers
      dreaming of re-union days.

Grandparent memories
      nearly fade in child memory
      except for parent's stories.

Days of absence pass slowly
      broken finally by a child
      bounding into open arms.

“Why are you crying, Grandpa?

It is the way
      of grandparents.

”And the child grew
      and became strong
      filled with wisdom.”

Of course grandparents
      questioned how parents
      were child-raising.

there were murmurs
      about proper diet
      and nap schedules.

Doubts about new-fangled
      notions
      of discipline.

Not the way
      the grandparents
      would do it.

Grandparents hide surprise
      in their pride
      as how things turn out.

They knew he'd be fine
      in spite of
      all their worries!

It is the way
      of grandparents.
